Sorrow as Harold Parker passes away

Fishwick 2008Councillors from all parties set aside party politics to remember Harold Parker, who sadly passed away over the Christmas period.

Harold (pictured on the left) spent 44 years of his life as a Labour Local Councillor in Preston, including 10 consecutive years as Leader of the Council, twice being Mayor and second time Guild Mayor.

Labour Group leader John Collins spoke of Harold’s role in the development of the former docks area, the establishment of UCLAN and his establishing links with China.

Harold was called ‘a real statesman of this city’, while others made references to Harolds’ humour forthrightness.  There was also particular mention of how Harold had saved Preston North End in their time of financial need by buying the land on which North End stands in the 1980’s.

Harold’s passing away is a loss to the city of Preston and the Labour Party.  Preston Labour Party expresses its sincere condolences to Harold’s family.

Promoted by Ray Collins, General Secretary, the Labour Party, on behalf of the Labour Party, both at 39 Victoria Street, London, SW1H 0HA.
