Riversway By-Election: The Fight Is On

Labour Members TogetherPreston Labour Party members met tonight to discuss their plans for the Riversway By-Election.  The by-election was called after the Lib Dem councillor in the ward resigned just 19 days in post.  Even though the by-election will cost the Preston taxpayer at least £5000, the Lib Dems have offered no apology to the residents of Riversway and still managed to elect the Tories into power again at Preston City Council.

Preston Labour Party is determined to fight for every vote in the ward and deliver the ‘street champion’ that the people of Riversway deserve – not an ‘accidental councillor’.

Linda and Dave RibbleLocal Labour Councillors have a track record of fighting for Riversway residents interests.  Major issues that Labour has fought on have been the Riverworks project; flood risk; the proposals for a fire station on Hartington Road; improvements to Avenham Park; the recent highways work on Strand Road; protecting the recreation zone on Hartington Road.

Contrast that to the massive cuts in services imposed by the Tories and Lib Dems.  Charges have risen under their administration of Preston City Council, including crematorium costs and charges on replacement bins.  Despite voting in favour of the bin replacement charges, the Lib Dems Docks 1betrayed their Conservative Party allies and tried to palm the policy off as a Tory ‘stealth tax’.

During the recent local elections, Preston Labour Party fought on the basis of a manifesto emphasising a radical programme for Preston City Council, entailing a significant shift in resources towards hard working people. Only Labour has campaigned on the issues that matter to the people of Riversway.

Preston City Council is yet to announce officially the date of the by-election, but Preston Labour Party is united and ready for the election.
