Members of Preston Labour Party met for a special meeting to discuss the recent election results, the future Labour leadership contest, and the future of the party. Labour had considerable succes in Preston but there was still regret at the general election loss. Despite this, the party members were united in their determination to continue to fight for Preston’s interests, with Labour values at heart.
Also in attendance was Mark Hendrick MP (picture below with Preston Labour Party Chairperson Carl Crompton), who took questions and comments from party members present. The local party was emboldened by a strong showing for Mark at the general election, and by an excellent performance in the local elections, including taking the safe Lib Dem seat of Larches. Councillor Phil Crowe, who won the seat in Larches and is secretary of Preston Labour Party said ‘It was a great meeting. Despite going into opposition, everyone showed how determined they were to keep fighting for Preston. Mark Hendrick regularly attends these meetings and it gives members the chance to question what’s happening in Westminster. It’s really good that he attends and he doesn’t always get an easy ride, but he’s always there to be accountable.’
Labour Student Sam Gardiner said ‘There was some heated debate, but that was good to see. There are some strong passions in the party and I think it’s good that Labour can accommodate such a wide range of opinions. Everyone came out united and ready to fight.’
With the Labour leadership contest, the challenge of a Tory/Lib Dem coalition in Preston, as well as the Lib Dem fiasco in Riversway ward, there is plenty to get involved with in Preston Labour Party. If you want to help in the Fight for Preston’s Future join us today.
