Better, High Quality Housing

Matthew Brown

Well known housing campaigner, Councillor Matthew Brown explains how a Labour led administration at Preston Council will lead on better housing in Preston.

Preston Labour has led the radical agenda at Preston Council on Housing, but the efforts of the Tory/Lib Dem coalition have made sure that these policies are never progressed. The result has been opportunity after opportunity missed, with unnecessary pressure put on hard working families in this city.

A Labour led administration will

  • work to ensure all new builds have zero carbon emissions.
  • examine whether we will be able to increase the current requirement of 20% or above on new developments to provide as much affordable housing as possible for the city
  • prioritise restoration and use of empty homes, in an effort to alleviate the housing difficulties in the city
  • use new government powers to provide new first class council housing
  • work towards better and stronger representation of residents, even to the point of naming and shaming landlords that fail tenants
