Labour Councillor’s efforts pay off as cemetery crime falls
Your Local Labour Councillors welcomed the recent news that crime has been cut in half in Preston Cemetery from 2006 -2007.  This follows strong pressure from Local Labour Councillors and local residents, including the Friends of Preston Cemetery.

In addition to security improvements, the council is part way through a £200,000 scheme to repair damaged and potentially dangerous monuments in the area known as the Old Cemetery.

Labour Councillor Nick Pomfret, who was instrumental in forming the Friends of Preston Cemetery, said ‘I’m very pleased to see this happen.  We’ve worked hard with the Friends of Ribbleton Cemetery and it has allowed the Council to work in conjunction with local residents to put forward funding bids for Cemetery improvements.’

This is not the end of the story, as restoration work continues and will run until March 2009.  So far over 2000 monuments and headstones have been restored, improving the safety and appearance of the cemetery.  Thanks to the pressure of your local Labour Councillors, the Council is also looking into improving the fencing and security gates.
